(3/26/10) After Losing Certification Nurse Assistants Are Hired by Assisted Living Facilities

Nurse assistants in California who have lost their certifications due to abuse, negligence or theft have been hired by assisted living facilities. According to The Boston Globe, in a sample of 140,000, two dozen nurses with revoked certification by the Department of Public Health were allowed by the Department of Social Services to work as caregivers. The division was caused by a lack of information exchange between the two agencies. A centralized system, as required by the Social Services department in 2006 could have prevented the loophole, but was never implemented due to the $500,000 cost of the system.
