(04/08) Georgia State University’s Gerontology Institute issues report on direct care staff in assisted living facilities
Direct care workers in assisted living facilities in Georgia expressed satisfaction with their jobs, but not with their pay or opportunities for advancement, according to a two-year study of 45 assisted living facilities in Georgia that involved 400 interviews and 369 site visits. In addition to evaluating predictors of turnover and actual turnover, the study made a series of recommendations for policy and practice. These recommendations included improving racial and ethnic sensitivity in the workplace, maintaining staffing levels that allow manageable workloads, ensuring opportunities for a full work week, and increasing compensation to workers (such as salary increases, financial incentives, and health coverage).
