What is it called?
· Assisted Living Residence
· Every residence has a license with a fire code classification and a medication classification (some also have a dementia classification)
· Fire Code Classifications:
o F1 licensure: for residents who are not capable of self-preservation in case of a fire
o F2 licensure: for residents who are capable of self-preservation
· Medication Classifications:
o M1 licensure: for residents who cannot self-administer medication
o M2 licensure: for residents who need no more than assistance in the self-administration of medication
· A dementia care classification is required when at least one resident’s dementia symptoms impact his ability to function
What services are provided?
· Facility provides
o Assistance with activities of daily living
o Medication assistance and administration
o Skilled nursing care or therapy in two circumstances
· Terminally-ill resident receives services from hospice agency
· Nursing care/therapy is provided for no more than 21 days for a condition resulting from temporary illness or injury
· Third-party services
o At resident’s own expense, outside services may be arranged, as long as resident remains in compliance with admission agreement and applicable state law
Who can be admitted?
- Need for assistance with activities of daily living
Who is inappropriate?
· Need for medical or skilled nursing care
· Disqualifying condition under relevant licensure category (F2 or M2)
· Bed-bound or in need of assistance of more than one person for ambulation
· Refuses assistance with medications, and facility believes resident cannot safely possess and control medications
What training is required for direct care staff?
· Initial training
o At least 12 hours including the following
· Emergency procedures
· Reporting abuse, neglect, and mistreatment
· Assistance with medications
· Infection control
· Continuing training
o Must be provided as appropriate on the same topics required in initial training
· Additional requirements
o At least one staff member must have CPR training
Is nurse staffing required?
· Facility must be visited by a registered nurse at least once every 30 days
Is any public payment available?
· Yes, the Medicaid program may pay for assisted living services through two Medicaid Home and Community Based Services Waivers
o One is for residents relocating from nursing homes
o The other is for the elderly and adults with physical disabilities
