What is it called?

·        Assisted Housing Programs / Assisted Living Programs and Residential Care Facility

o       Services are provided in private apartments in buildings that include a common dining area

o       Two programs: Type I and Type II

 

What services are provided?

·        Type I and Type II:

o       Assistance with activities of daily living

o       Assistance with instrumental activities of daily living

o       Medication administration

o       Dietary services

o       Services may be provided indirectly from an outside source

·        Type II:

o       Nursing services

 

What kind of admission contract is used?

·        All programs use the same state-mandated admission contract. 

·        This allows consumers to shop and compare facilities.

Who can be admitted?

·        Type I and II:

o       Need for assistance with activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, and medication

·        Type II:

o       Need for nursing services

 

Who is inappropriate?

·        Type I

o       Require nursing services

·        Type I and II:

o       Pose a direct threat to the health and safety of others

o       Require services not met by the facility

 

What training is required for direct care staff?

·        Initial training must include:

o       Emergency procedures

o       Infection control.

o       16-hour course for employees of an Alzheimer's/Dementia Care Unit

o       40-hour course for unlicensed staff administering medication

·        Continuing training

o       Biennial eight-hour refresher medication course for unlicensed staff

 

Is nurse staffing required?

·        Type II: nursing services may be provided directly by, or under the supervision of, registered nurses or licensed practical nurses

 

Is any public payment available?

·        Yes, MaineCare (Maine's Medicaid program) may pay for assisted living services through a Medicaid Home and Community Based Services Waiver

·        There also is a state plan option that covers assisted living services
